  • Vibrant Community

Countless hours of PetSmart associates volunteering with philanthropic partners to make their communities vibrant and strong.

"When I heard about the PetSmart Gives Back program, and that our district was allocated funds to donate to a local pet charity, one group immediately sprang to my mind: Hand in Paw. As an Area Pet Trainer, I have had the fortunate opportunity to help several Pet Parents and their dogs become registered Hand In Paw therapy teams. This past year, I have been involved as a volunteer myself, and I am continuously overwhelmed by the generosity and hard-work of the volunteers of this program. I feel so fortunate to work for a company that believes in giving back, especially to such a rewarding program."

National Partnerships

At PetSmart, we know pets make us better people and we want to share this experience with others. PetSmart Gives Back partners with national organizations that enrich people's lives through the power of pets.

PetSmart has partnered with Family Promise, a nonprofit organization committed to helping low-income families achieve lasting independence, to launch PetSmart Promise. This national program ensures families don't have to give up their beloved family pets just because they find themselves homeless while transitioning between housing.

PetSmart Promise expands existing Family Promise day centers throughout the country to include facilities for families to keep their dog or cat at the shelter with them. The families are involved in caring for their pet and are able to keep their family - including their four-legged members - together during a difficult time.

The concept initiated with an on-site kennel facility at Family Promise of Greater Phoenix in 2012 and launched nationally in 2013.

PetSmart Promise offers a menu of options for Family Promise facilities, based on individual needs and limitations. These options include:

    • On-site pet housing facility for cats and dogs.
    • An initial expansion into PetSmart PetsHotels, providing complimentary use of boarding space in existing PetSmart stores, for families utilizing nearby Family Promise centers. Banfield Pet Hospital will provide free veterinary consultations and services to ensure participating pets receive the preventive care they need.
    • Installation of fish tanks in Family Promise centers across the nation, teaching children and families utilizing the center the care and responsibility required when owning a pet.
    • Creation of a foster network of Family Promise employees and volunteers to house pets when a Family Promise pet housing facility or PetSmart PetsHotel is not available.

PetSmart Promise's goal is to open five new on-site facilities each year in the future until all 182 Family Promise facilities have the opportunity to participate in the program at a level that is appropriate for them.

At PetSmart, we understand the unique healing power pets can have on people. Pet therapy animals help young patients with rehabilitation and provide the unconditional love that only animal can give. Research has shown that patient interaction with animals provides both positive physical and emotional benefits, including lowering blood pressure, decreasing heart rate and anxiety, and reducing stress.

In 2012, PetSmart teamed up with Phoenix Children's Hospital to sponsor their animal-assisted therapy program, PetSmart Paws Can Heal. The initial launch was such a success that we have expanded the program to hospitals throughout the country with our exciting new PetSmart Paws for Hope program.

PetSmart Paws for Hope creates additional pet therapy teams in the hospitals and allows for more daily visits from a therapy animal for each patient. Additionally, the program provides support for the patients and their families after their hospital stay. In 2013, PetSmart expanded this program into Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, California and Orlando Health System in Orlando, Florida. PetSmart plans to expand this program into three new hospitals across the country every year.

PetSmart for Patriots is a joint endeavor between PetSmart and Canine Companions for Independence, in support of Canine Companions' Wounded Veterans Initiative. The partnership helps increase access to assistance dogs for the military veterans who need them. Since 1992, Canine Companions has placed 102 dogs with military veterans, with the number of dogs placed tripling since 2008. Many of those dogs have been placed with men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and returned with spinal cord injuries, limb amputations and deafness. PetSmart's support also helps to raise awareness of service dogs among veterans and other pet parents. In the coming year, a veteran will be able to walk into any PetSmart store and learn about Canine Companions and what they need to do to get their own service dog.

PetSmart opened the first portable community pop-up park, also known as PetSmart P.U.P., in Phoenix in December of 2013. Together with the Mayor of Phoenix and Keep Phoenix Beautiful, we developed this concept as a part of a larger multi-use plan to leverage vacant land in a sustainable way. P.U.P. is a unique portable dog park that arrives at its venue with all of the dog park components inside a shipping container such as ramps, Oops stations, movable bench seating and much more. P.U.P. is the first of its kind in America, and PetSmart would like to take it to adoption events, emergency relief efforts and other charitable events around Phoenix and across the country.

Hometown Heroes

PetSmart is proud to call Phoenix home and believes in supporting organizations that improve the lives of people in its backyard. Through partnerships with organizations supporting underserved communities, PetSmart Gives Back is making a difference throughout the Valley.

PetSmart has joined the Arizona Humane Society to care for and protect the animals of those who are protecting us around the world. Launched as a response to the September 11th attacks, Project Active Duty is a way to give back to the brave men and women serving our country. The program allows pet parents leaving for a tour of duty to entrust their pets with AHS, providing not only peace of mind during their deployment, but comfort knowing that when they return, their pet will be waiting for them.

PetSmart teamed up with the Arizona YWCA to build the Glendale YWCA Dog Park, Sponsored By PetSmart for the local pets and residents of The Valley. A donation funded a fenced and landscaped dog park, as well as a variety of additional landscape improvements. The park is a combination of decomposed granite and turf sod in the shape of the PetSmart Bounce and includes a large dog and small dog areas. In addition to the donation, many of PetSmart's associates volunteered their time to help make the dog park a reality.

PetSmart is proud to partner with Camelot to improve the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through programs of horsemanship and outdoor education, which develop self-worth, independence, and active participation in the community. Their barrier-free, wheelchair-accessible facility makes it possible for students to saddle, ride, and groom our horses with minimal help.

The PetSmart Pet Food Pantry at Desert Mission Food Bank has been a tremendous success. PetSmart donates 5,880 pounds of dog and cat food each month to help struggling families keep their human food on their table and pet food bowls full. Volunteers package bulk food into three-pound bags and placed in the PetSmart Pet Food Pantry display case for Food Bank clients to pick up while they shop for food for themselves and their families.

Beginning in 2012, PetSmart has sponsored Fresh Start Women's Foundation's Mentoring Program. The program empowers women to transform their lives through engagement with a Mentor. Mentees work with Mentors in the community to achieve goals based on one of four tracks; career, education, entrepreneurship or financial self-sufficiency. With PetSmart's support, mentoring services were expanded to include the Fresh Start WISE GED Test Preparation course. Fresh Start is currently serving 28 women with mentoring and plans are underway for further expansion in 2014.

PetSmart has partnered with Gabriel's Angels to help deliver healing pet therapy to at-risk children to enhance the quality of their lives forever. PetSmart's sponsorship helps supports Gabriel's Angels' Pet Therapy Teams. The Therapy Teams, made up of an individual and his/her companion pet, engage children to develop and improve healthy core behaviors that are critical to normal development.

PetSmart is proud to sponsor Logan, a therapy horse at the Horse Rhythm Foundation. Horse Rhythm Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed to offer specialized services for veterans, first responders and their families suffering with mental health disorders and physical disabilities due to combat or public safety tragedies. Horse Rhythm Foundation offers equine-assisted services that recognize, respect, and honor the basic values of our military, law enforcement and firefighters, as well as their families.

PetSmart is a proud sponsor of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office's K-9 Victim Support Program. Sam, a golden retriever, is a service dog trained to work with victims of crime. Young victims are often traumatized by heinous crimes and intimidated by the criminal justice system. Sam provides the support needed for these victims to successfully attend court and confront their perpetrator. As a part of this partnership, PetSmart and the Maricopa County's Attorney's Office created a 2014 calendar featuring Sam. The calendar includes pet-friendly tips as well as tips about preventing crime.

PetSmart is proud to sponsor ONE Community's CHANGE AGENT award in support of the Unity Pledge. The UNITY Pledge is a concerted effort by Arizona businesses and individuals to advance workplace equality and equal treatment in housing and hospitality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals and their allies. ONE Community's mission is to create a coalition of socially responsible businesses and individuals who support diversity, inclusion and equality.

PetSmart teams up with one*n*ten to help enhance the lives of Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgendered and Questioning youth. PetSmart's 2013 donation funded the 2013 OUTdoors! Camp, one*n*ten's summer camp in Northern Arizona. The mission of the camp is to help LGBTQ kids develop leadership skills, work in collaborative ways and develop a strong sense of self and community.

PetSmart is the presenting sponsor of the Phoenix Suns' Martin Luther King Jr. Game Day Celebration. The program includes a MLK Junior Pre-Game Symposium featuring an NBA Legend as well as a center court ceremony honoring local leaders and organizations that have made a difference for African Americans in Arizona. Also in celebration of Black History Month, PetSmart employees, members of The 100 Black Men of America, the Suns and the Phoenix Suns Gorilla will team up for a day of service covering graffiti in the Phoenix market.

PetSmart partnered with StreetLightUSA this year in an effort to help heal child survivors of trafficking and exploitation. StreetLightUSA is a residential program that provides a healing and safe environment for girls ages 11-17 that have been rescued from trafficking throughout the United States. PetSmart worked with the Arizona Animal Welfare League to find a rescue dog. As part of PetSmart's donation, we provided supplies, toys, playhouse renovation and lifetime food for the rescue dog. PetSmart also donated four aquariums filled with a variety of fish, as well as supplies, to the center.

PetSmart partners with Tumbleweed to ensure every young person is valued, supported and has a safe place to live, grow and thrive. Tumbleweed works to provide a safe space for collaborating with youth and young adults in our community who are vulnerable or experiencing homelessness. These safe spaces will allow access to caring relationships, resources, and programs that offer opportunities for young people to develop their individual potential. PetSmart sponsors Tumbleweed's Casa de Suenos program and the GreenHouse Project.
